Letter On The Window

Could’ve said that you weren’t happy
could’ve told me face to face
just left a letter on the window
and disappeared without a trace

you spelled it out that it was over
could’ve told me what went wrong
and with a letter on the window
you signed your name and you were gone

with a letter on the window
you up and walked away
now losing me forever
is the price you have to pay

with a letter on the window
it was over, said and done
a letter on the window
was how you chose to run

with a letter on the window
you saw fit to leave the scene
leaving memories in tatters
and cold heartache in between

with a letter on the window
it was over said and done
a little letter on the window
was how you chose to run

Born Ready

I was born ready
I was born ready
I was born ready
raisin hell but baby, rock steady
best believe I was born ready

they say the world’s a rugged place and I know that is true
but I’m gonna get me a piece of mine before my run is through
cuz when it comes to living hard, I think I’ve got the knack
when that doctor slapped that baby’s ass, you know I slapped him back!

I was born ready
I was born ready
I was born ready
raisin hell but baby, rock steady
best believe I was born ready

I wake up every morning and put both feet on the floor
no time to yawn, just get it on no matter what’s in store
I’m jumpin in and it ain’t no sin cuz baby I don’t care
Heaven ain’t a place to be, it’s how you’re getting there

I was born ready
I was born ready
I was born ready
raisin hell but baby, rock steady
best believe I was born ready

I’ve been through some rough times, much as any other man
but I’ll be raisin’ cain right thru the pain most any time I can
cuz I might be done tomorrow hell I could be gone today
but when I leave, you best believe the last words that I’ll say is

I was born ready
born ready
born ready
raisin’ hell, but baby rock steady
damn right I was born ready

My 83

It’s a half ton Chevy with a white cap
missin half of a mud flap
pop rivets, a bag of bolts
a bud bottle, a pack of colts

the window sticks when you roll it down
but I like to work it hard so I can hear that rumblin’ sound
of my 83

Daddy handed me the keys to the 83
when he retired to an rv
he bought her new on my 10th birthday and said
‘Son, she’ll be yours someday’
‘you’re gonna drive away’
‘in my brand new 83′

She floats like a boat
she’s got a lot of room
my seatbelt smells just like my girl’s perfume
there’s a place for my elbow
down by the driver door
daddy used to sing along to the am radio
they don’t make em’ like that anymore

I remember me the joke about the dog
about the wife, about the job
you hit it forward, you press rewind
my little 83 ain’t too far behind
for whatever life can throw at me
I’ll take it all on eventually
behind the wheel of my 83

…my 83

After The Storm Is Gone

The clouds are barely moving
the trees are standing still
the boards are off the windows
and the flag’s back on the hill

The car’s back in the driveway
and the lights are coming on
still I’m picking up the pieces
now that the storm is gone

This house is barely standing
the roof is caving in
a broken chain is all that remains
where the porch swing should’ve been

The flowers that you planted
are pulled up from the lawn
they’ve blown away and there they’ll stay
now that the storm is gone

we picked up the glass fallen from a broken frame
belonging to a picture that would never be the same
the cracks in the foundation seen in the light of dawn
all need to be mended now that the storm is gone

A noonday sun is shining
where our home used to be
and standing in the wreckage
is you and me

Should we pack up our belongings
and get to moving on
or can we get our lives back together
now that the storm is gone
can we survive all this weather…
now that the storm is gone

The Boys

They were known as the boys
They were fishermen
cared bout their family
cared bout their friends
looked out for their neighbors
out on Grand Manan
they were known as the boys
They were fishermen

them laid-back boys
well, they were getting sore
finding old needles
washing up on the shore
on their peaceful island
from the dealer’s floor
one day, them boys
couldn’t take anymore

So 40 of the boys
stopped by one day
said the judge can’t help you
and the cops are away
it’s four hours by ferry
till they come along
and when it gets back
you’d best be gone

well, they cursed them boys
and spat at their feet
said go to hell,
and get off of our street
that’s all the boys needed and it didn’t take long
till all hell broke loose until the crack of dawn

The boys went home
and they were fightin’ mean
came back with bats
and chains and gasoline
said the ferry ain’t comin’
for four more hours
so until that time,
your ass is ours

The boys burned their house
clear to the ground
and beat the dealers bad
while the mounties just stood around
they had their justice
and knew what they’d done
when the charges came
the boys, they didn’t run

They went to court
To make their plea
Everyone showed up
Their friends and family
All of their neighbors, one by one
had thanked the boys
for what they’d done

They were known as the boys
They were fishermen
cared bout their family
cared bout their friends
looked out for their neighbors
on Grand Manan
they were known as the boys
They were fishermen

Take Me Where My Boots Are Walking

My boots are scuffed and dirty
but they fit just like a glove
I’d swear that pair’s made just for me
by the lord above

who knows where they’ll take me to
and where I’m gonna be
and wherever they may lead me to
well, that’s alright with me

Lord, take me where my boots are walking
heaven only knows which way they’ll go
lord, take me where my boots are walking
take me a little bit further on down the road

my boots are always there with me
whatever comes to pass
no, I don’t look for trouble
but they’re good at kickin’ ass
they’ll put their their heels up to the sun
they’ve soldiered through the rain
through many paths I’ve travelled
they’ve been there and back again

Lord, take me where my boots are walking
heaven only knows which way they’ll go
lord, take me where my boots are walking
take me a little bit further on down the road

And when my life is over
when all my days are done
when my boots are finished walking
to the setting of the sun
who knows where I’ll head to
when my spirit’s finally free
so keep them old boots on my feet
when they bury me

Lord, take me where my boots are walking
heaven only knows which way they’ll go
lord, take me where my boots are walking
take me a just little bit further on down the road
take me just a little bit further on down the road
take me just a little bit further on down the road
take me a little bit further on down the road

Mining Man

Well, here comes the mining man
come to make a living any way he can
he staked a claim in the back of my land
mining man

dug up the mountain, cut down the trees
gave me a job, but he gave me a disease
hey mining man, brother I can’t breathe
when you bleed us dry will you up and leave
you say you won’t but I just don’t believe
and when my family’s left to grieve
will you care, mining man

will you tend my wife, will you feed my child
will you put the fish back in the water and the deer back in the wild
will you return all you’ve defiled
mining man

hey Politician, do you hear my plea
will you think of my best friend’s family
his son died of cancer at the age of seventeen
from you, mining man

Please don’t listen to the lies he’ll tell
you’ll only dig your way deeper into hell
deeper and darker than the deepest well
from the mining man

Hey Mining man, I lost my soul
at the bottom of a deep, black hole
dealt with the devil when I gave control…

….to the mining man…

God Damn That Bottle

God damn that bot-tle, it’s getting the best of me
I’m trying so hard to leave it alone but it won’t set me free
lord lead me to the wat-er quench this thirst and ease my pain
and God damn that bot-tle before I go insane
Lord know that I ain’t swearing, I don’t want to be profane
I mean just what I’m saying, I wouldn’t take your name in vain
I’m praying for salva-tion so I’ll say it once again
God damn that bot-tle before I go insane

god damn that bottle, it’s getting the best of me
my woman, she’s ready to leave me alone and so’s my family
I know I have it coming and there’s only me to blame
so God damn that bottle before I go insane

That devil’s got a hold of me and he ain’t letting go
I’m gonna get to drowning in that whiskey river flow
guide my hands and let me pour them evil spirits down the drain
and God damn that bottle before I go insane
Please, God damn that bottle before I go insane

The Lights Of Town

The day is done, it’s time to run
The work week’s finally thru
We could sit here countin’ trees
But we got more to do
The 2-4’s in the back trunk
And the sun is goin down
Yeah, I can’t wait to see the lights of town

J-Byrd’s ridin shotgun
Turtle’s behind the the wheel
Me n Brock and Danny are rollin
To Coco’s wailin’ steel
When we breeze into that city
we’ll sure be feeling fine
yeah get me on down the border
Get me to that welcome sign

Cuz I can’t wait to see the lights of town
It’s Friday night in my Sunday best that makes me come around
We’re gonna do a hundred clicks in 45, hell we ain’t slowin down
I can’t wait to see the lights of town!

I brushed my boots and washed my jeans
And freshly combed my hair
Gonna pop me an ice cold M-G-D
As soon as I get there
I’ll be hummin along to Hank Snow
Underneath that Miller sign
Yeah, we’ll hit all the hot spots
And we’ll have ourselves a time

Cuz I can’t wait to see the lights of town
It’s Saturday in my Sunday best that makes me come around
We’re gonna do a hundred clicks in 45, hell we ain’t slowin down
I can’t wait to see the lights of town!

When the party is over
When I’ve had my fill
We’ll pack up all them empties
And head back over the hill
A couple nights in the big top, hey
it’s all right by me
Then get me back where I belong
Big city set me free

Cuz I can’t wait to see the lights of town
It’s Sunday in my Monday best that makes me come around
We’re gonna do a hundred clicks in 45 and we ain’t slowin down
I can’t wait to see the lights of town!

Cuz I can’t wait to see the lights of town
It’s Sunday in my Monday best that makes me come around
We’re gonna do a hundred clicks in 45 and we ain’t slowin down
I can’t wait to see the lights of town!

The Last Of The Free Men

I’ve been wandering on my way these desolate highways
Till the high beams igniting the stars of a wide open sky
the world’s passing through me and all I can find
are signs from the last town quietly waving goodbye

I’ve seen all the same faces from all the same places
but somehow they seem to be different to me every time
I’m home while away and I’m away while I’m home
forever I’ll roam The Last Of The Free Men, the last of my kind

So give me a smile, a clap of your hands so I still understand
this journey I take is one I must make although never in vain
I’m the last of the free men and maybe until then
there’ll be one more time that you’ll see me again
I’m the last of the free men, and maybe until then
there’ll be one more time that you’ll see me again

from hotel to motel, diner and station
the throttle, the bottle asleep in the sway and the glow
old cards and guitars and ribbons of smoke
shining down rivers of blacktop and treeline below
I’ve turned to the next page, walked on the next stage
the blaze of the spotlight’s ballet in my eyes
I’m here with you all, with you all I’m alone
every moment our own

The Last Of The Free Men, the last of my kind
So give me a cheer, a raise of your beer so I still understand
this journey I take is one I must make although never in vain
I’m the last of the free men and maybe until then
they’ll be one more time that you’ll see me again
I’m the last of the free men, and maybe until then
there’ll be one more time that you’ll see me again
I’m the last of the free men and maybe until then
there’ll be one last time that you’ll see me again…
